Peter’s Wagon picked up junk
in my favorite picture BOOK,
he rolled round the neighborhood,
finding stuff he thought was good,
someone’s trash might be your treasure,
in a flash, you’ll see it better, (like Peter..)
he swapped an old hat for a shell,
& a jar of worms for a green canteen
then he filled the shell up to the brink
with water for the birds to drink,
every CHILD sees the potential
in plain sight: your next adventure
when I was only 3, people READ to me..
a broken rake was his next prize,
with a snapped-off handle, just his size,
then a muffler he tied underneath
(so) his wagon rumbled down the street
and it sang a squeaky song, as it rolled along..
someone’s trash might be your treasure,
in a flash, you’ll see it better,
all the FUN that we dreamed together
isn’t gone, I still remember
when I was only 3, people READ to me..
Peter’s Wagon picked up junk
in my favorite STORY BOOK…
My grandmother used to read me this book every Sunday. I’ve been looking for a copy of it for years.
That’s awesome!
I have a copy of the book–I’d be happy to e-mail you the song, Larry!
Oh, my very first favorite childhood book! I have my copy from 1968, so very worn and loved. I had no idea someone had written a song about Peter! Do you have it recorded anywhere? I don’t see it listed on any of your albums.
Thanks, Marti! I really loved this book as a kid, too.
I’ve added a link, so you can hear the song.
