Stranger’s Couch

back-road beautiful makes me think of you
+++ ‘cause no one planted this, yeah, no one planted this, it just grew,
and the first leaves have turned from green to red in patches overhead,
+++ to frame the sky’s impossible blue…
+++++ the river’s high and muddy from the rain that fell
+++++ last night, afraid to drive, I slept on a stranger’s couch,
+++++ my morning eyes are foggy, but the weather’s better now,
+++++ so I’m headed home again..

small-town beautiful makes me think of you, ‘cause they’re not making news,
+++ yeah, there’s no late breaking news where they live,
& I drive past the “Sweet Delights” where the kids hang out at night
+++ and flirt over ice cream, talk about their dreams, “hey, what gives…”
+++++ and the river’s high and muddy from the rain that fell
+++++ last night, afraid to drive, I slept on a stranger’s couch,
+++++ my morning eyes are foggy, but the weather’s better now,
so I’m headed home again..

big world beautiful makes me think of you
when we’re all spinnin’ ‘round, hangin’ upside down,
are we stuck like pins in God’s pincushion?
or do we roll like stones? all my thoughts drift home
‘cross a river high and muddy from the rain that fell
last night, afraid to drive, I slept on a stranger’s couch,
my morning eyes are foggy, but the weather’s better now,
so I’m headed home again…
across a river high and muddy from the rain that fell
on a second hand umbrella, through a leak in heaven’s well,
I spent the whole night dreaming on a stranger’s couch…
and now I’m headed home again…
