The Score

Written January 1999

Tab

I’m a fleeting little footnote buried in your epilogue,
and I’ll drift out of your radar, and you’ll lose me in the fog,
+++ all I asked for once was granted, I’m not wishing any more

I’m the one who used to love you, back before you knew the score..
so I slipped into your orbit, like a spaceship or a rock,
and you watched me spin around you, then you set me like a clock,
+++ I was waiting for a signal, (I’d) still be waiting there today,
I’m the one who used to love you, back before you learned to play..

and they say as we get older, short-term memory goes to hell,
you’ll forget what you just ordered, and your lover’s name as well,
+++ but I’ll remember having breakfast, (we) laughed about your middle name,
I’m the one who used to love you, back before you won the game,
+++ all I asked for came too quickly, I’m not wishing any more,
I’m the one who used to love you, back before you knew the score…
