cold_as_this
on a day as cold as this we can hardly tell
the smokers from the rest of us, merely breathing out,
and I forgot the science, is it water freezing?
the way I see her breathing from across the street, and
on a day as cold as this we break out hats and scarves,
and I have friends who knit I’m now thankful for,
I am thinking of them as I wear their gifts
around my neck and on my head, and
there’s a chance of snow, greater than the chance
we’ll ever know each other’s secrets,
what I wouldn’t give, if I could make it through
a few more days with a few less regrets..
on a day as cold as this, I will write your name
in the windows of this bus, on a frosted pane,
I am thinking of you, though you’re nowhere close
to where this bus goes, where this whole town knows that
there’s a chance of snow, greater than the chance
we’ll ever know each other’s secrets,
what I wouldn’t give, if I could make it through
a few more days with a few less regrets..
on a day as cold as this we can hardly tell
the smokers from the rest of us, merely breathing out,
and I forgot the science, is it water freezing?
the way I see her breathing from across the street…
I really LOVE this song & think of it everytime it’s freezing cold here in the snowbelt (which is fairly often). I really wish it would show up on your next album or at least an informal recording.
Thanks for your great performance at Schenley Plaza today (6/14/08). Some us may always refer to this as “The Knitting Song” (sorry!) Your lyrics are great. Keep it up! I adore “Cinema 4”, by the way.
