I Don’t Have A Chance w/ You

I asked the gypsy, she said it was not in the cards,
+++ I asked the bookie, he gave me the longest odds,
+++ I asked the preacher, he said miracles are few,
+++ it looks like I don’t have a chance with you..

all the self-help books I read tell me to set audacious goals,
& dream up big achievements that seem beyond my control,
so I set out to win you with a love that’s kind and true,
+++ but I don’t have a chance with you,

‘cause it’s like we both play baseball, but we’re in different leagues,
you’ve got knuckleballs and sliders, I’ve got wiffleballs on tees,
and I’m swinging for the fences, but I’m probably naive,
+++ I asked the gypsy, she said it was not in the cards,
+++ I asked the preacher, he said, “son, you can only pray so hard,”
+++ then the bookie gave me 999-to-2,
+++ it looks like I don’t have a chance with you.
+++++ I don’t know why it is you haunt my dreams?
+++++ why you’re starring in the movie playing on my eyelid screens,
+++++ why everything about you seems so right,
+++++ is there a flu shot for this heart cold that keeps me up at night?

and so the saying goes, sometimes you can’t get there from here,
can’t squeeze blood from turnips, or make purses from pigs’ ears,
somewhere in this fairy tale my wishes disappeared,
+++ ‘cause I dont’ have a chance with you.
+++ I asked the preacher, he said, “Leave it to the Lord,”
+++ I asked the bookie, he said, “Son, some bets you can’t afford,”
+++ & then the gypsy kindly double-checked the tea leaves, too,
+++ looks like I don’t have a chance with you..

you’re as lovely as a sunset, slipping out of view,
too bad I don’t have a chance, maybe I should learn to dance?
+++ looks like I don’t have a chance with you…
